Marlins Coach Jody Reed Hit by Foul Ball, Suffers Broken Leg

Marlins third base coach Jody Reed suffered a broken right leg on Wednesday after outfielder Jesus Sanchez hit a rope down the line that caught Reed in the shin.

The exit velocity of the foul ball off Sanchez’s bat was a crisp 96.6 miles per hour, probably enough to crack any shin. To Reed’s credit, he hopped around for quite a while, as he tried to shake off the pain.

Miami manager Skip Schumaker addressed the incident after the game, acknowledging that Reed was hurt pretty bad by the line drive.

“He’s going to be down,” Schumaker said. “I’m not sure how long, but he had X-rays, and the doctor said it was broken. We’ll see how long he’s out for unfortunately.”

Miami quality assurance coach Griffin Benedict took over for Reed as the third base coach.

Reed played 11 seasons in the major leagues from 1987-97 with the Red Sox, Padres, Dodgers, Tigers and Brewers. He was a career .270 hitter with 27 career home runs to go along with 392 RBIs.
