Marks and Spencer has found itself at the centre of a hot debate from shoppers which has been sparked by the name of one of their new pairs of jeans.
The retailer shared a snap of their £39.50 jeans worn by their ambassador TV Presenter Holly Willoughby to their social media channels and their style has generated comments from mums.
M&S shared the pictures, which features the This Morning presenter wearing the jeans paired with a pink Mon Amour jumper, which they posted to their Instagram and Facebook pages.
They captioned the post: "@hollywilloughby’s amour? Our classic mom jeans, with an effortlessly flattering fit that will never go out of style #MyMarks."
The term 'mom' jeans - which has been used to describe the garments style - has divided shoppers, with some a little angry and confused at the term.
It is usually used to describe high-waisted, loose-fitting jeans that were originally a trend set throughout the 1980's and 1990's.
"Since when have we been Mom’s in the UK", fumed one shopper.
While another responded to the comment with: "Just a name of the jeans I think nothing meant by it."
“Mom” jeans", questioned another.
"So who are mom jeans designed to fit, mums?", blasted another.
Catherine Wood chimed back: "It may be accepted but it is horrible isn't it?"
However, some shoppers were quick to defend the name of the jeans, with some adding that it was a 'general term' and had "nothing to do with M&S."
"It’s a universally accepted term for a jeans style. Nothing to do with M&S. Nothing to do with Americanisation", explained one shopper.
A second shopper agreed and commented: "It’s the name of the style - nothing to do with ‘Mums’ at all."
"It’s a style of jeans. Like boyfriend or girlfriend jeans", said another.
While another shopper hit back at the explanations with: "I get that. Just don't get why the Americanised spelling ."
"Because that’s how it is. And it’s not Americanised - lots of countries use ‘mom’. It’s not something made up by M&S either", one shopper hit back with.
While some shoppers argued in the comments over the term of the jeans style, other shoppers took the time praise the £39.50 jeans, reports the Manchester Evening News.
"Mom Jeans are great! Especially for those of us with adequate bottoms. They are comfortable and flattering. High waisted to accentuate a waistline. Well Done M&S and Holly!!!", one shopper pointed out.
While another said: ""Love the mum jeans in summer with sandals. So comfortable and stay in place."
M&S' new £39.50 jeans are available in-stores and online now.
