Marks and Spencer customers horrified at £4 'strawberry in reverse' snack

A new Marks and Spencer food line has got shoppers wondering what they can do next - because it's a bizarre new kind of white strawberry which doesn’t taste of strawberries. Some described the whole idea as "totally wrong" while others wondered if it was an early April 1 gag.

M&S was feeling confident about the £4 White Pearl Strawberries which it claimed had flavours of vanilla and pineapple and was basically a "strawberry in reverse". Tom Pedley, M&S Strawberry Buyer said, Derbyshire Live reports: “At M&S we love to be first to market and introduce products that no one else can, our customers get really excited when we introduce new flavour produce or hybrids!

“We’re known for our Candyfloss Grapes, while the Limelon was all over the news so that’s why we had to bring the White Pearl Strawberry to M&S, not only does it have a really unique flavour but it’s incredible to look at, plus, it’s great for kids, who doesn’t want to try a reverse strawberry!”

Not everyone was convinced though. Marilyn Robinson said: “I had to check it isn’t 1st. April.” Nick Jenkins also said: “Is it April 1st?!”

Kim Marshall wrote: “Apparently these taste like vanilla and pineapple- I’d like my strawberries to taste like strawberries- I’m old fashioned like that!”

They were developed in Japan, using seeds from Japanese white strawberries crossed with traditional strawberries to create the unique blend and according to the supermarket, this tasty fruit is best enjoyed at room temperature.

Lindsay Shona Robson said: “They simply look like they’re unripened don’t they? Can’t say I’m tempted. The candy floss grapes that were a craze a few years ago were lovely though- so these could be hit or miss.”

Chris Eaves said: “They look horrid and I bet they are tasteless. However, so are the red ones at this time of the year. No doubt someone with more money than sense will buy them but whatever happened to fruit and veg in season?”

Many people responded to the Instagram post, with georgiehalfacree saying: “wooowwwwwwww!!! need to try,” whilst bare_face_skin joked: “Not me thinking they were white chocolate.” velvety_rabbit_guisborough said: “So wrong on so many levels. I will never buy this.”

laumccluskey also joked: “Just had to look at the month and make sure it wasn’t April 1st,” meanwhile, richcallender said: “I literally just tried to tap my phone screen with my debit card in the hope that they would be purchased and appear on my desk right now.”

thedailyreev added: “Adds to list of strange things M&S will take my money for,” whilst mr_plantgeek simply wrote: Haha epic!”

Carol Lee said: “Nice to see something different, although I’m really a Raspberry person, strawberries always to sweet unless ground black pepper added to bring out flavour.” Heather Illingworth said: “Loved mine in my fruit box for lunch.”

Lisa Chow said: “This is gold in Japan. I’m excited it’s now available in the UK.” Sam Betts said: “These sounds amazing.”
