'Market Street is the real side of Manchester'

Bare Necessities is one of the newest stores to jump on the vintage clothing train in Manchester. However, this shop does things a little differently — with low prices and a desire to recycle as much as possible. That’s made it a favourite of many a bargain hunter and influencer alike .

Behind the till, on a very damp day are Jack Hogan and Shanae Jenkins. Jack, 23, is the manager. 21-year-old Shanae is an assistant at the shop, living in south Manchester.

In a first for the I work in town series, the MEN spoke to both workers in a double-interview to see what they love and loathe about their city.

Where’s your favourite hidden gem?

Shanae : Can we say here?

Jack : Aside from here, Eastern Bloc. They always have tech DJs there. They get some pretty sick DJs in from Europe.

You wouldn’t think it because it’s a standard bar, but it’s all on vinyl too.

Shanae: I’ll say NoHo, the club, because it’s free entry!

What’s your favourite view of the city or in the city?

Jack : Deansgate Locks. I live right next to Deansgate-Castlefield tram station, and the view of Deansgate Locks at night, from my balcony, is just beautiful. When the sun sets with the buildings in the background, it’s lovely.

Shane : I used to live in Hulme and you got a really good view of the Deansgate buildings. I used to sit there.

Where’s best to go for your dinner in town? We’ve got a suggestion of Greggs here…

Shanae: This isn’t a regular thing! For Jack it is!

Jack : No it’s not! There’s a beautiful Thai spot in Arndale Market, but I forget the name of it.

Shanae: I like that Caribbean place across the road, it’s called Eat and Sweet.

Jack: I’ve found mine! Arndale Shawarma. I’ve been there four times. It’s there 100 percent.

Where would you take someone to show them the real Manchester?

Shanae: Market Street!

Jack: Northern Quarter, if you want to show someone the nice, real side of Manchester.

What’s your favourite Mancunian neighbourhood?

Shanae: Withington, which is my own, because I don’t really know any others.

Jack: I grew up in Levenshulme, so I’ll go for there.

Shanae's favourite neighbourhood is her hometown of Withington (Manchester Evening News)

What are the five words that best describe the city?

Shanae: I think it’s unique, quirky, diverse, wet, and exciting.

Jack: Vibrant, on-the-up, unity, friendly, and fun.

City or United?

Shanae and Jack : United.

Liam or Noel?

Jack: Liam.

Shanae: I don’t know.

Your favourite city pub is…?

Shanae: The Oast House.

Jack: City Road Inn. I live opposite it. I can stumble back.

Who is your favourite city ‘character’?

Shanae: That guy on the bike with the speaker!

Jack: Yes!

Shanae: Either him, or the guy who does Michael Jackson impersonations on Market Street.

What’s the one thing you’d add to Manchester if you could…

Jack: More temporary accommodation for the homeless. Just like a little gaff where they can go and chill in the day. It stops them knocking around in the cold and rain all day.

Shanae: Maybe like in Rome, where they have nice water fountains. Not dodgy ones, just nice ones!
