The “Tortilla Challenge” is fairly simple: two players fill their mouths with water before taking it in turns to slap one another with floppy tortillas. The person who laughs first, invariably spraying water all over the place, is the loser.
Tortilla slapping has been all over the internet in recent months, mostly on TikTok, where many of the more viral videos begin nowadays.
Lately the game has started becoming less of an online phenomenon and has made its way into real life entertainment, at least in terms of events with audiences, referees and prizes.
One of these will land in London next month, a fully fledged evening devoted to the exercise. It is to be hosted by the food blogger Fat Boi London.
The UK’s inaugural championship is lined up to happen at Market Place in Vauxhall in November. Competitors must undertake a round of rock, paper, scissors to determine who goes first.
Safe to say, the game is likely to appeal to anyone in the mood for silliness. The evening will not only feature wrap slapping, but also a Lucha Libre wrestling match — not open to everyone — a mariachi band, as well as tacos and margaritas.
Apparently, anyone can enter. Winners will get a year’s worth of tacos and margaritas, though there’s quite a lot of small print involved.
The Tortilla Slap Championship will take place on November 9 at Market Place Vauxhall, 7 South Lambeth Place, London SW8 1SP, between 4-5pm. More via @marketplaceofficial
