Mark Zuckerberg warns against taking screenshots of Facebook Messenger chats

Meta boss and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has warned Messenger users against taking screenshots of chats - as soon friends will know when you've done so.

A new series of updates to Facebook Messenger have been announced, including end-to-end encryption like on Whatsapp, and Zuckerberg has warned people to be wary of one of the new features.

He said that users will be notified if someone screenshots a disappearing message, as the texts are supposed to automatically vanish after a set period of time, as the Daily Star reports.

That means if a friend sends you a secret message they don't want you to have forever, and you screenshot it they'll know - so beware!

Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook profile: "New update for end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats so you get a notification if someone screenshots a disappearing message.

"We're also adding GIFs, stickers, and reactions to encrypted chats too."

He then shared an exchange with his long-term wife and partner, Priscilla Chan. Zuckerberg makes a cheesy joke about a supercomputer, and Priscilla takes a screenshot, demonstrating how the notification will work in action once disappearing messages are activated.

The feature is similar to a long-standing tool in Snapchat where your messages and pictures disappear after a set period of time.

If you think disappearing messages are for you, here's how to turn them on.

  1. Open a chat with someone in Messenger
  2. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen. You'll get a notification telling you to swipe for Vanish Mode
  3. Keep swiping up until the blue circle is filled.

Vanish Mode will now be activated. Just make sure to keep an eye out for that notification about your messages being screenshotted.
