Mark Zuckerberg, the tech titan and budding jiu-jitsu fighter, spends a lot on private security. The billionaire has forked over around $43 million in security programs that ensure the protection of he and his family since 2020, according to the New York Post.
Meta said in a February filing that Zuckerberg can use the money -- which was upped to $14 million for 2023 -- for "additional personnel, equipment, services, residential improvement," adding that the expense is a necessary one considering his import to the company.

(META) -) went on to explain that the cost of Zuckerberg's private security balances just fine against the fact that he "has requested to only receive $1 in annual salary and does not receive any bonus payments, equity awards or other incentive compensation.”
But despite his annual multi-million-dollar security programs -- Meta set aside $27 million in 2021 for a security program for Zuckerberg's family -- the Facebook founder has been donating privately to groups seeking to defund the police.
Zuckerberg's family foundation, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, according to investigative reporter Lee Fang, donated $3 million to PolicyLink, the non-profit behind Defundpolice.org, since 2020.

Zuckerberg's charity donated a further $2.5 million to Solidaire, another anti-police organization, throughout the same time period.
The 'Defund Police movement,' which took off in the wake of the 2020 murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, focuses on putting the money that powers police forces to less violent uses.
"In the U.S., we spend $107 billion more on police than on public housing. Money is not the problem. The problem is how we spend our tax dollars," Solidaire said of the movement. “We want to work towards a future for Black people and all impacted communities where they can move freely through the world without being harassed, intimidated, or harmed by police.”
DefundPolice.org said that their goal is to divest from "institutions that kill, harm, cage and control our communities," and instead invest that money into better housing, healthcare, income support, employment and violence prevention efforts.
Camden, once one of the most violent cities in the U.S., abolished its police force in 2013, establishing a new, reformed one under county control. In the decade since, according to Politico, the city's homicide rate -- as well as the rate of excessive use of force -- have both fallen.
