Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta has announced that it will introduce a desktop version of its text-based app Threads.
This comes after Elon Musk caused controversy on X (formally known as Twitter) with the announcement that he would remove the block feature from the app.
Meta employees have teased the introduction of a desktop version of the app for weeks as the company looks to retain users.
When Threads was introduced earlier this year, it attracted over 100 million users.
However, this number quickly dwindled with recent figures showing an 82% drop in daily activity, according to CNN.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said he is "quite optimistic" about the potential of the app.
“We saw unprecedented growth out of the gate and more importantly we’re seeing more people coming back daily than I’d expected," he said during a company earnings call last month.
He added: “And now, we’re focused on retention and improving the basics. And then after that, we’ll focus on growing the community to the scale we think is possible.”
This is not the only feature being worked on by Meta with a better search function set to be introduced.
Currently, Threads only allows users to search for usernames on the platform.
When is the desktop version of Threads being released?
Meta has not yet provided a date for the launch of the new version of Threads but Instagram head Adam Mosseri said it could happen soon.
He said on a Threads post on Friday that "we are close on web".
While the official launch is still to be announced, Mashable reported that some people would have access to the feature over the "next few days" but no information has been shared on who will get early access.
