Mark Zuckerberg just dropped a digital bombshell that’s about to turn the content moderation world into chaos. Meta is officially telling professional fact-checkers to pack their digital bags and hit the road.
“Fact-checkers have just been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they’ve created,” Zuckerberg declared in a video message.
The tech giant plans to “dramatically reduce the amount of censorship” across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, signaling a significant shift in how social media content will be managed.
Meta will replace professional fact-checkers with a system similar to X (formerly Twitter), relying on community notes to provide context and verification.
He is essentially turning content moderation into a crowdsourced Wikipedia of truth – what could possibly go wrong?
Zuckerberg framed the decision as a return to free speech principles, citing last year’s presidential election as a “cultural tipping point towards prioritising speech”.
The company will move content moderation teams from California to Texas, claiming there’s “less concern about the bias of our teams”. I’m sure it has nothing to do with Trump‘s bestie and now apparently Mark’s idol, Elon Musk, basing his operations for his multiple businesses in the Lone Star State. Maybe Zuckerberg wants a made up role in the government too.
Zuckerberg openly admits this approach means “we’re going to catch less bad stuff”. The company plans to loosen restrictions on topics like immigration and gender, arguing these are “out of touch with mainstream discourse”.
The timing isn’t exactly subtle. With head of UFC Dana White – a close friend of Donald Trump – recently joining Meta’s board, and Nick Clegg stepping down as president of global affairs, the move feels suspiciously aligned with potential political shifts. Plus, Meta’s recent $1 million donation to Trump’s inauguration fund says a lot about Mark’s affiliations. But, thank God they’re getting rid of fact-checkers because of “political bias”.
Meta’s oversight board has responded cautiously, saying they look forward to understanding the changes “to ensure the new approach can be as effective and speech-friendly as possible”.
People have already taken to Threads to test out the new policy:
It’s clearly going well.
So grab your popcorn, fact-check your sources, and maybe invest in a hardcore critical thinking course. We’re gonna need it.
