Mark Wright in tears on This Morning as he recalls trying to save a dying dad's life

Mark Wright became emotional on This Morning on Thursday, as he shared the importance of CPR training after a distressing incident on a recent holiday.

Host Holly Willoughby fought back tears, as former TOWIE and I'm A Celebrity star Mark detailed a moment on a trip where he jumped into action, in the hope of saving a fellow holidaymaker's life.

Mark and wife Michelle Keegan had just arrived at their hotel, when they heard a woman in distress revealing her husband had collapsed.

As no one at the hotel jumped into action, with Mark unsure if anyone was CPR trained, he told Michelle he needed to help the woman.

He had recently learned how to do CPR himself, and just a week before the incident he filmed a tutorial style video of him doing it to teach others.

Mark revealed: "My best friend is Charlie Edinburgh, the son of the footballer Justin Edinburgh who lost his life from a cardiac arrest in 2019. He started a charity convincing people to learn CPR and trying to get defibrillators in as many places as possible.

"He asked me to be part of a video where I learned some CPR and convinced others to do the same. That day I landed off the plane, I received the video I had shot the week before."

Mark then emotionally detailed the horror moment the man collapsed, while he had apparently been in a bad way prior to Mark getting there.

The star revealed he "did what he could", and choked up on the show as he explained that he wasn't able to save the man.

Mark revealed how the family of the man were grateful for what he did, as it "bought them time" to say goodbye.

He said: "I was checking into the hotel with my wife and this lady this, poor man's wife, came up in a bit of a tizz and was panicking, saying her husband had collapsed and nobody in the hotel responded.

The first thing I thought was I'm in a place where you would expect people to be trained... no one was reacting to this lady's cries. I said to Michelle I am gonna have to go, nobody is reacting here.

"Because it was so fresh in my mind, it's having the confidence. I know what to do, I can do this, I should go."

As Holly revealed the daughter of the man had thanked him as he "bought them time" with their dad before he passed away, Mark choked up and said: "Yeah I did.... I did what I could. He was there for a while before I got there... sorry."

Holly became teary, as she supported Mark and said: "It is really distressing. Like you said you've got someone's life under your hand and it doesn't get anymore real than that."

Phillip Schofield also shared his support for Mark, as he relived the moment he too had to perform CPR to save his dad's life years ago.

Phil revealed he was barely home at that time, but he happened to be in the house with his parents when his dad suddenly collapsed.

He revealed him performing CPR as quickly as he did gave his dad 30 extra years, something he said would not had happened if he hadn't been given resuscitation straight away.

Phillip explained: "He collapsed when we lived in New Zealand and he was certainly dead on the carpet, and the whole world went into a sharp focus. I hadn’t been trained but I'd watched stuff on TV and mum was running next door, the whole place was in a panic but I did that.

"It's knackering to do that for half an hour. Thankfully the ambulance arrived very quickly, they came in and did the defibrillator immediately and brought him back."

Phillip said that after major surgery, his dad lived for another 30 years, adding: "If I hadn’t have been in that night there was no chance he would have survived those extra 30 years, and seen his grandchildren."

He then told Mark: "You could only do your best. Thank goodness you were there it's clearly upsetting, but you were told by his family it gave them the opportunity to say goodbye."

Mark went on: "I kept him... he wasn't necessarily alive when I was giving CPR but he was coming back in certain breaths at certain points, so it allowed the ambulance to get to him and put him on a life support machine.

"So he wasn't pronounced dead under my hands. I did all I could and that’s all you can do in that situation. It's a scary moment but if you're trained then you know what you are about to do is correct."

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV1 and ITVX.
