Mark Robins has outlined Gus Hamer qualities he'd bring to Leeds United amid ‘next step’ challenge

Coventry City boss Mark Robins believes Sky Blues playmaker Gustavo Hamer was among the best players in the Championship last season. It should come as no surprise to see the Brazilian linked with a move to Elland Road this summer given Robin's comments.

Leeds United are in need of a number of additions in the heart of midfield as Daniel Farke looks to guide his new side back to the top flight. Leeds are among the early favourites for promotion to the Premier League, but are someway behind their rivals in terms of transfer business given the wait for the 49ers takeover to be approved.

Hamer is said to be one of a number of midfield options for Leeds this summer, while Coventry are hoping to offer him fresh terms and tie him down to a new deal. A new contract wouldn't guarantee he stays the Sky Blues, but would give them a bit more security given Hamer's contract expires at the end of 2024.

Robins felt Hamer had taken his game to a whole new level last season - epitomised in a 4-1 win at Blackpool where he had a hand in all four goals.

“We said in the dressing room that he’s been as good as anyone in the league for the last two months,” Robins told Coventry Live in the aftermath of the win. “He’s been really good.

"There is some good play and good passing and he’s lively. Not just lively, because he’s got some really good quality as well.”

Despite an impressive campaign, Robins believes Hamer can still improve in the final third. He added: "The only thing I would say is that he can score more goals and that will be the next step for him and for us, but I think he’s been really good.”
