Mark McGhee in surprise Rangers penalty verdict as Dundee boss admits he was 'quite happy' for fans to interrupt game

Dundee boss Mark McGhee believes Rangers deserved to be awarded their penalty in his side’s defeat to the champions.

Referee Bobby Madden handed the Light Blues a soft spot-kick when he penalised Jordan McGhee for a slight tug on Alfredo Morelos.

The Dark Blues players protested furiously but McGhee surprisingly had no complaints and said after the bottom side’s 2-1 loss: “Ach, I thought it was a penalty.

“It’s a light penalty, an easy penalty but he does tug him a wee bit.

“And as soon as he tugs him the referee will give a penalty. Referees are going to give a penalty.

“You’ve just got to live with that. It was a penalty.”

The Dundee support at Dens reacted with fury as their Ibrox counterparts held up the action with their protests over November’s planned friendly with Celtic.

But McGhee reckoned the tickertape parade almost backfired on their team.

“That helped us to an extent, rather than them,” he said.

“They’re renowned for coming out fast, trying to win the game by half-time.

“But those interruptions didn’t help them, so we were quite happy. We got a breather.

“It worked against Rangers.”
