Mark Cuban Says This Popular Career Advice Is Completely Wrong

We've all seen those bits of career advice so trite that they end up emblazoned across everything from daily planners to motivational posters: hustle every day. Follow your heart. Do what you love and the money will follow.

But those slogans don't work for everyone -- and for many, they don't work at all.

Billionaire and celebrity investor Mark Cuban shed some light on his own take on career advice in a recent guest spot on ReThinking With Adam Grant. When asked about the worst piece of career advice he had ever gotten, Cuban had an answer at the ready.

"'Follow your passions.' No. Follow your effort," Cuban said. "No one quits anything they're good at. If I followed my passion, I'd still be trying to play professional basketball."

This is not the first time Cuban has given this advice, so it's clearly something he believes in strongly. In 2018, Cuban spoke at the Amazon Insights for Entrepreneurs series and shared a similar sentiment.

However, for those who might feel dejected about the idea of abandoning the pursuit of a passion as a career, Cuban has another nugget of wisdom to share.

“I am going to give you one other secret: The one thing in life that you can control is your effort,” says Cuban.
