The 'Lonely Girls' exhibition by Maritoey runs until Oct 30 at Central: The Original Store, Central Group's first retail store on Charoen Krung Road.
Maritoey, whose real name is Marisa Yamsanor, tells the story of many young girls who have to face loneliness in different ways while living in the city in her first solo show. Inspired by American realist painter Edward Hopper, the renowned artist behind 'Nighthawks', Marisa, who won a silver medal from the 37th Exhibition of Contemporary Art By Young Artists at Silpakorn University, creates lonely girl characters with long faces in different styles, some of which embody icons such as Sailor Moon and Mona Lisa.
Their boxy Lego-esque appearance may look cute but it represents something much deeper namely being framed by social norms, imprisonment of one's own feelings and the inability to fully express those feelings. The artist wants to tell you that no matter how lonely you may feel, there are many others who feel the same way.
Find her acrylic paintings and sculptures on the fourth floor of Central: The Original Store until Oct 30.
