The latest round of Mario Kart 8 DLC is live with Yoshi’s Island and Birdo, and Nintendo’s got even more new characters in store. The Big N announced in a press release that they still have two more rounds of DLC in the works, and while we knew that already, we didn’t know what they might include.
“Two upcoming waves of DLC are still to come, featuring more returning courses and characters from across the Mario Kart series,” Nintendo said in the press release (thanks, Eurogamer).
The racing game’s previous rounds of DLC only added new or returning courses, with Birdo being the first new character Mario Kart 8 has seen in years. The pool of possible candidates from previous Mario Kart games is rather small. The robot R.O.B., Funky Kong, and the Queen Bee from Mario Galaxy are some notably absent drivers, and while King Boo is playable, his Double Dash partner Petey Piranha has yet to grace the tracks of Mario Kart 8.
Despite an impressive pitch on Saturday Night Live, Pedro Pascal probably won’t be showing up in Mario Kart again.
For now, we’ll have to content ourselves with pondering the question marks on the driver selection screen while we take off on the latest DLC’s new courses. These include the brand-new Yoshi’s Island track, alongside DK Summit from Mario Kart Wii and fan-favorite Waluigi’s Stadium from Double Dash.
The remaining two rounds of Mario Kart 8 DLC don’t have a release date yet.
