The Fisheries College and Research Institute in Thoothukudi, a constituent of Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University, organised a marine fish seeds stocking programme under NADP funded scheme on ‘Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA)-based culture technology to augment fish production as an alternative livelihood for the fisherfolk at its mariculture research farm at Tharuvaikulam on March 26.
Anitha R. Radhakrishnan, Minister for Fisheries, Fishermen Welfare and Animal Husbandry, was the chief guest. He listed the different government schemes devised for the welfare of fisherfolk. H appreciated the Fisheries University for undertaking different research programme for increasing fish production.
The Minister distributed five satellite phones to fishermen on the occasion.
Collector K. Senthil Raj and Ottapidaram MLA M.C. Sanmugaiya offered felicitations. Vice Chancellor G. Sugumar stressed how research-oriented proven technologies benefited fisherfolk.
FCRI Dean R. Santhakumar, Assistant Professors K.S. Vijay Amirtharaj and G. Aruloli were present.
The Minister and other dignitaries released fish seeds and juvenile lobsters into the floating HDPE sea cages.
