Marina Granovskaia must ignore unfair transfer witch-hunt to acknowledge fatal Chelsea reality

Kepa Arrizabalaga quickly became a hot topic of conversation following Kevin De Bruyne's strike, which guided Manchester City closer to the Premier League title.

Thomas Tuchel arrived at the Etihad with a depleted squad that have run through brick walls for the club with two wins over Tottenham in the Carabao Cup, contending with Covid, injuries and absentees to the Africa Cup of Nations just to put a smile on the faces of Chelsea fans.

The Blues' suffering has handed Malang Sarr the opportunity to stake his claim for a place in the Chelsea squad amid rumours linking him with an exit in the summer.

While the Frenchman has raked in the majority of the plaudits, Chelsea fans don't seem to acknowledge Arrizabalaga's contributions to the side.

Tuchel's second choice goalkeeper has performed well when called upon in Edouard Mendy's absence. The 27-year-old will make mistakes like every player on the pitch, but the growing tendency to always scapegoat the Spaniard as the root of every Chelsea problem is unwarranted.

As De Bruyne's curled effort nestled past Arrizabalaga, social media erupted and, without hesitation, pinned the Spaniard as the sole cause of City scoring.

Arrizabalaga could have done better; once the ball was in flight, his sidestep was rightfully in question, but a goalkeeper is the last line of defence, and Chelsea let the Belgian navigate his way into a shooting opportunity.

The Spaniard's sidestep could be traced back to a lack of chemistry between his teammates, which can only be built through sustained game time with familiar figures.

This would inject an element of doubt into Arrizabalaga's decision making, second-guessing the flight of the ball based upon the defenders' positioning.

Speaking on BT Sport following the game, Rio Ferdinand explained how a subconscious awareness and knowledge of positioning can not be artificially produced in training and is instead built through frequent conversations and match situations.

"Your goalkeeper and your defenders need to have a conversation before the game," he said. "If someone is coming into particular areas, we know that you're going to stand that side, and I'll cover the other side of the goal.

"I think if you don't have those conversations, then where the confusion lies and you end up trying to take steps to cheat a little bit, and you get caught out.

"That's the question, are they having those conversations to know which areas of the goal you're going to cover in those situations."

The potential lack of natural chemistry between Arrizabalaga and his defence doesn't protect the Spaniard from fair criticism.

The problem at hand is the reluctance among some fans to hold other players accountable, knowing that the goalkeeper can be made the easy scapegoat without anyone batting an eyelid.

The move begins with Chelsea losing an aerial duel after going long, and the Blues' press is then caught in no man's land - they're then easily bypassed because the distances are far too big.

De Bruyne then wriggles away from N'Golo Kante, who recognised the threat but didn't do enough to make a tactical foul and surrender a yellow card.

The west Londoners had multiple chances to prevent De Bruyne from unleashing an effort goalbound before Arrizabalaga would be called into action. A collective series of mistakes that led to a goal from a good side who, in truth, were moments away from scoring.
