Mariah Carey has launched the festive season on November 1 with an over-the-top Halloween-to-Christmas video, declaring "It’s time!"
With Halloween barely over, the singer launched the countdown to Christmas with the kitsch video just after midnight, which many fans have lapped up, but others slammed as “ridiculous”.
The pop icon shared the elaborate clip on social media, which sees her dressed as Morticia Addams, waltzing through a gothic mansion, only to flip a switch and transform the scene from Halloween to Christmas.
Carey is joined by a tango partner who morphs from a Gomez Addams lookalike to a festive snowman, setting the stage for the Christmas season.
One fan wrote, “Iconic that this happened at 12:01am on the dot.” Another said: “This is what we need to kill the stress and dramas right now. Bring on Christmas!”
But it was a case of ”bah humbug” for others, who even suggested the timing was tone deaf. One wrote: “This is pretty ridiculous. Can we at least wait until December?”
Another said: “Yeah, we get you’re the Christmas queen, but we need to focus on the [US] elections next week please and all the anxiety going on. We can do this after.”
Every year, the All I Want For Christmas Is You singer rings in the holiday season with her signature festive announcement. Her now-annual “it’s time” videos often follow a “not yet” teaser, and this year was no different.
In October, Carey released a clip teasing fans about the “rush” to celebrate Christmas, correcting a pilot who suggested she was bound for the North Pole.
While her classic holiday hit remains iconic, the star has expanded her tradition into yearly countdowns, Christmas albums, and specials, becoming a true symbol of the season.
She has become increasingly synonymous with the Christmas season since the release of her first holiday album Merry Christmas in 1994.
She is visiting 20 US cities in the next two months for festive-themed shows in celebration of the album’s 30th anniversary.
