Mariah Carey just shared the sad news that her mother Patricia Carey and sister Alison Carey died on the same day last weekend.
The singer shared a statement saying her heart was “broken” by the turn of events and asked for privacy during the grieving period.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” she told People.
“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mum before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Carey’s fraught relationship with her mother has been well-documented over the years. In her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she talked about their “complicated love”.
“Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”
She also shared her love for Patricia Carey in the dedication section of her memoir, saying: “And to Pat, my mother, who through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
Patricia Carey was a vocal coach and opera singer who trained at Julliard. In 2010, she made a surprise appearance on Carey’s Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You special, singing “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus”.

It’s unlikely Carey spent any time with her sister Alison prior to her passing, as the pair have been estranged for some time.
In her memoir, Carey said it was “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact” with her siblings Alison and Morgan. In 2020, she described Alison as “troubled” and “traumatised” during an appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s Apple TV+ interview series.
Alison was 63 at the time of her death and according to her friend David Baker, she was in hospice care.
“We knew it was coming. There were signs that she couldn’t go any further,” he told Times Union. Before she passed, Alison’s children spent time by her side and she was “thrilled to see them”.
At this stage, no details about Patricia’s cause of death have been revealed.
