Let’s start off with something important here: Yes, Ryan Gosling deserved an Oscar nomination for playing Ken in Barbie. He was fantastic all around, especially when his job goes beyond “beach” later in the movie.
But I’m going to go ahead and say it: Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were robbed. If not for Robbie’s incredible job navigating through Barbie’s struggles as she learns about the real world, and Gerwig’s expert directing to bring laughs, tears and everything in between, that movie wouldn’t be as instant-classic as it is.
And as some fans are pointing out, it kind of proves the point of the movie, doesn’t it? As one post on X (formerly Twitter) said: “Ryan Gosling, while deserving, got an Oscar nomination for Barbie while Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie didn’t? Completely proving the point of the movie in 20 [expletive] 24 you cannot make this up.”
Here’s more reaction:
No nomination for Margot Robbie or Greta Gerwig for the #Oscars but Ryan Gosling gets one. Literally the whole point of the Barbie film 😳 pic.twitter.com/SVpX6diGJb

So Ryan Gosling’s nominated for playing ken but Margot Robbie isn’t nominated for playing barbie… in barbie #Oscars

Seems really odd to me how #Barbie could be nominated for best lead actor, best supporting actress and even best film, but they don't acknowledge Margot Robbie as lead actress (the heart and soul of the film) or Greta Gerwig as director.#Oscars2024 pic.twitter.com/rAvbAFxcPu

So Greta Gerwig created one of the most original films of the decade, one that completely blew apart people’s expectations of what a #Barbie movie could be & resonated with millions … yet apparently that’s not *quite* worth a nomination for best director??? #Oscars2024 pic.twitter.com/UXbm4zrdIy

Wait Ryan Gosling got nominated for his role as Ken, but Margot Robbie didn't get nominated for Barbie?! And Greta got snubbed for Best Director?!?!
Way to justify the literal plot of the movie @TheAcademy 🥴 #Oscars2024 pic.twitter.com/6MEHaSeTjZ

greta gerwig being snubbed at the #Oscars despite barbie being the ONLY $1 billion movie solely directed by a woman feels VERY sus to me… pic.twitter.com/cjzqkmOzYU

Regardless of your feelings towards Barbie as a film, how do you not even acknowledge the women who made it exist (Margot and Greta) yet nominate it for Best Picture and acknowledge its male star for both his performance and his song?? Margot was the perfect Barbie too… #Oscars pic.twitter.com/bibla1qmmm

Barbie, a film about the struggle of women in everyday life and how they’re not as valued as men, didn’t get a nomination for its WOMAN director nor the WOMAN lead but the MALE lead did……

it’s VERY clear that the men who choose the nominees for the oscar’s, missed the point of the barbie movie pic.twitter.com/ywxd9dGtoc
