Carnival season 2025 is reaching its peak in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, with vibrant parades, formal balls, and costumed revelers adding to the festive atmosphere. The celebrations are deeply rooted in Christian and Roman Catholic traditions, starting on Jan. 6 and culminating in Mardi Gras, the final day of feasting before Lent.

New Orleans hosts some of the most renowned Mardi Gras celebrations in the U.S., featuring street parties, elaborate balls, and lively parades with high-tech floats. The city's diverse festivities cater to all, creating a six-mile-long block party atmosphere that is a must-experience for everyone.

Across southwest Louisiana, the Cajun French tradition of Courir de Mardi Gras sees masked riders engaging in medieval-inspired rituals, including chasing live chickens for a communal gumbo. In New Orleans, African Americans don elaborate Mardi Gras Indian suits to pay homage to Native Americans and showcase their cultural heritage.

Following a recent tragic attack in New Orleans, security measures for Mardi Gras have been significantly heightened. The Department of Homeland Security has raised the risk rating, deploying hundreds of law enforcement officers, SWAT teams, and armored vehicles to ensure the safety of attendees.

To safeguard revelers, a serpentine layout of barricades has been set up along St. Charles Avenue, while drones are prohibited, and restrictions on certain items like ice chests remain in place. The late date of this year's Mardi Gras, falling on March 4, promises warmer weather along the Gulf Coast, though there is a chance of rain on the day.

'Throws' are the trinkets tossed to spectators during parades, with plastic beads being a common sight. Some krewes are exploring eco-friendly alternatives, while unique items like painted coconuts and hand-decorated shoes are coveted souvenirs at specific parades.
