Marcus Rashford to PSG links could help Manchester United land Mauricio Pochettino favourite

It’s been a tough season for Marcus Rashford at Manchester United.

The 24-year-old is having his worst season at the club since his breakthrough more than five years ago.

Rashford has made 24 appearances in all competitions for United but has registered only five goals and two assists across three competitions.

His last goal came in the 1-0 win against West Ham in mid-January and since then he has gone seven games without finding the net.

In a season that won’t live long in the memory for United fans, Rashford has been among the most disappointing aspects of it.

MEN Sport reported that the player is assessing his options and considering a move, such has been his frustration over the way things have gone at Old Trafford this season.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently stated that Rashford’s situation at United is being monitored by Paris Saint-Germain, and while no contacts have yet been made with the player nor with United, he could be an option to replace Kylian Mbappe, should the Frenchman leave the club once his contract expires.

Following their latest monumental Champions League collapse, it’s likely that Mbappe will want to leave the French capital and go to the team who just inflicted their latest embarrassment, Real Madrid.

Moreover, Lionel Messi could also leave, with reports emerging this week that a return to Barcelona could be on the cards ahead of next season.

Should Messi and Mbappe both leave, then PSG will be in the market for one or two attackers (or three, this is PSG, after all). Would Rashford make a good fit in Ligue 1?

It remains to be seen if Rashford would want to leave United for France, to begin with, even if he is assessing options. Monetary reasons aside, there is little motive for players to join PSG, a club who face little to no competition domestically and who wilt in the face of adversity time and again in Europe.

Rashford wouldn’t be short of choices should he really want to leave United, both at home and in Europe, despite his poor form this season.

Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori both left England for Serie A and have both thrived in new surroundings. This could be an alternative for Rashford.

However, should he want to pursue a move to Paris, then United could use this as leverage to have a player go in the other direction and make a move to Manchester.

Although unlikely given his status as a fan favourite and unique skillset, Marco Verratti would be a shrewd choice as a player to ask for in any potential negotiations. Verratti would give United a measure of control in matches that they simply don’t have at the moment.

Mauricio Pochettino remains in United's sights as a potential next manager and he has made Verratti integral to his project since arriving last season. The 29-year-old is one of the best in the world at ball retention and he would instantly make United’s midfield better. A player like Fred would play better having someone like Verratti alongside him to take care of the ball, while the Brazilian takes care of winning it back.

Of course, this is all hypothetical, but should Rashford really want to make a move to PSG, then United could do worse than asking for Verratti in return.
