Marcus Rashford's Man Utd contract clause has major implications on PSG transfer

Paris Saint-Germain may have to pay a pretty penny if they want to sign Marcus Rashford from Manchester United this summer.

Although the England international, 24, has just one year left on his existing deal, United have a clause in his contract enabling them to trigger an option to extend it by a further year. That means he effectively has a two-year contract and the Red Devils aren't at risk of losing him on a free transfer next summer.

Of course, United could still release Rashford in June 2023. His contract puts the Premier League club in a strong position and gives them the opportunity to resist PSG's advances. They could also command a big transfer fee for a player who's struggling for form.

It's believed PSG are considering making a move for Rashford this summer. Fellow striker Arnaud Kalimuendo has just completed a move from the Ligue 1 champions to Rennes, while Mauro Icardi could also quit PSG before September's transfer deadline.

PSG manager Christophe Galtier has revealed his desire to sign a new striker this month. The Parisian club have reportedly been in touch with Rashford's representatives - with talks progressing 'positively' - but are yet to start negotiations with his employers.

"We want another striker to come in," Galtier told reporters. "With a busy schedule, we want arrivals. The club is working, I am in direct contact with [football advisor] Luis Campos. Luis is in direct contact with our president [Nasser Al-Khelaifi]. We must not make any mistakes. Will this player arrive? We don’t know. It has to be a real plus."

Rashford established himself as one of the best young forwards in Europe, scoring 43 goals for United between August 2019 and May 2021. Yet he's struggled for form in recent years, finding the net only five times last term to lose his place in Gareth Southgate's England team. According to Transfermarkt, Rashford is valued at £54million.

Jamie Redknapp believes Rashford should quit Old Trafford. "This is a young man that I beleive has to go and explore and go to do something else," the ex-midfielder told Sky Sports in April. "He looks like he’s fallen out of love with the game right now.

"Go and play somewhere, because there’s no doubt there’s a player in there. There will be hundreds of clubs that would want him. He’s had enormous success against the likes of Paris Saint-Germain in Europe. Clubs in England would want him – Tottenham, Arsenal – everyone would want him. But I think his time has run at Man Utd."

Rashford has been on United's books for 17 years after progressing through the academy. He's just seven goals away from scoring his 100th for the club and has won four trophies - the Europa League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and Community Shield.

Speaking in March, former United boss Ralf Rangnick told Rashford he could leave the club this summer. "I don't think this is an issue and he never said anything about that when we spoke yesterday," said the German. "But again, the window is closed right now.

"Even, suppose he and his agents or his family at one stage of the summer think about maybe going to another club, well then he can do that, but in the summer. Now the window is closed. It's got nothing to do with tomorrow's game or the game on Tuesday."
