Marcus Rashford is proving Ralf Rangnick wrong at Manchester United this season

Marcus Rashford's start to the 2022-23 season is light years away from the torrid time he endured in the last campaign. In the entirety of the previous season, Rashford scored just five goals for Manchester United in all competitions.

Already in fewer than half the appearances he has made this campaign, the 25-year-old has found the net on seven occasions, the latest being the winner against West Ham on Sunday. It is not merely his output which has improved though. Rashford's confidence on the pitch has returned and the forward finally looks like the player who burst onto the scene all those years ago.

During the lowest point of last season, Rashford looked to be heading for the exit door at United. His form was in the gutter and even interim boss Ralf Rangnick was not overly concerned about the Englishman leaving.

"I don’t think that he’s not had enough game time," Rangnick said in March. "He’s had 13-14 games since I’ve been here now, he played more games from the start than he didn’t play from the start.

"I don’t think this is an issue and he never said anything about that since we spoke yesterday [Thursday]. But the [transfer] window is closed now.

"Even suppose he and his agents or his family at one stage of the summer think about maybe going to another club, well then he can do that but in the summer. Now the window is closed."

Interest in Rashford from other clubs was there in the summer with PSG hopeful of the forward wanting a move to the French capital. However, it would never materialise as new manager Erik ten Hag insisted that the striker was in his plans.

Ten Hag is now reaping the rewards for the faith he showed in Rashford and Rangnick's previous comments appear foolish at best.
