Marcus Rashford has two challenges to discover top Manchester United form

When it comes to scoring a match-winning goal in second half stoppage time, no Premier League player in history boasts a better record at doing it than Marcus Rashford.

The Manchester United striker's 93rd minute winner against West Ham United at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon marked the fourth occasion in his career when he has stepped up in injury time and made himself the hero United were craving.

As Edinson Cavani, the provider for Rashford's winner, celebrated as though he'd scored the goal himself and Fred — who had been substituted earlier in the second half — hurtled down the touchline in his winter coat to join in with the celebrations, Rashford will have let out a massive sigh of relief. And just because of the magnitude of the goal, but because of how much it will have meant to him on a personal note.

Concerns were raised about his wellbeing and attitude after the 1-0 win over Aston Villa in the FA Cup third-round earlier this month, especially after he turned his back on a loose ball inside the penalty area when he had a realistic chance of getting to it ahead of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

It was a concerning few seconds and ones that raised genuine worries among fans and pundits.

But having been forced to go about his duties the hard way since that disappointing showing against Villa, starting on the bench for United's recent wins over Brentford and West Ham, Rashford has responded in the best possible manner when called upon by Ralf Rangnick, scoring in each of his cameo appearances.

The lift Rashford will have been given after netting both of those goals will be huge. While questions have been asked of United's players' character this season, Rashford's really shouldn't have been called into question.

He is United through and through and wears his heart on his sleeve.

His passion and raw emotion after sending Old Trafford into raptures on Saturday afternoon was there for all to see. You could not help but be pleased for him.

Ralf Rangnick has already made it clear to his players that you have to work hard and perform well to justify a place in his starting line-up, with Harry Maguire's recent wait for a recall highlighting that.

Rashford was also set the challenge of forcing his way back into the starting line-up by United's interim manager, who has pointed to the wide range of quality he has to choose from in the final third.

Rangnick said: "We have a lot of wingers, we have a lot of outstanding players in that position.

"Jadon (Sancho) was not available today (Saturday) but we have a lot of players for those two positions (striker and winger) and Marcus is one of them.

"Right now, yes, he has scored twice in consecutive games when he came from the bench but, of course, his ambition is to play regularly from the start again.

"It is up to him. If he continually plays on a high level and keeps scoring goals, of course this is the best way to get back into the team and play from the beginning."

Rashford will have his sights set on earning his place back in the team after his contributions in United's last two outings, though he may feel frustrated by the fact that he has experienced an upturn in form just as the Premier League season has been placed on pause for the winter break.

When the important moments are going a footballer's way, the last thing they want is to be denied the chance to continue that hot-streak. Unfortunately for Rashford, he has turned the heat levels up on his form just as the powers that be decided to enforce a temporary halt.

Of course it is important not to get too carried away after just two goals, especially for a player of Rashford's talents, but it is impossible not to feel sorry for him in this situation that is nothing more than unfortunate timing. He'll hope that continuing to train in Dubai with some teammates will keep him warm ready for the challenges that lie ahead in February and beyond.

He will hope, at the very least, he has given Rangnick something to think about over this current hiatus, that is for sure.
