Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Marcus Mariota has agreed to a one-year deal with the Washington Commanders, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday.
Mariota’s contract is a one-year, $6 million deal worth up to $10 million including incentives, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal will be finalized after the new league year begins Wednesday.
The 30-year-old Mariota spent the 2023 season with the Eagles, where he served in relief of starter Jalen Hurts in three games. One year prior, he served as the Atlanta Falcons’ starting quarterback, throwing for 2,219 yards and 15 touchdown passes against nine interceptions in 13 games before being benched for Desmond Ridder. Mariota then left the Falcons to undergo knee surgery.

The Oregon alum was the No. 2 pick in the 2015 NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans, where he went 29—32 as the starter and accumulated 13,207 passing yards and 1,399 rushing yards over his first five pro seasons. Mariota also spent two years with the Las Vegas Raiders as Derek Carr’s backup in 2020 and ‘21.
This April, the Commanders are expected to use the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL draft on a quarterback, but Mariota—along with third-year signal-caller Sam Howell—could compete for the starting job.
