Marcos Alonso offers blueprint on how Chelsea can relaunch Premier League title challenge next season

Marcos Alonso believes Chelsea can fight for the Premier League title next season should they improve their home form.

Thomas Tuchel’s side were touted as major players alongside Liverpool and Manchester City when heading into the season and briefly looked capable of competing with two teams who have redefined what it takes to win England’s biggest prize.

Injury problems and a Covid pile-up, however, wrecked their title challenge and only the FA Cup remains as an avenue for further success.

Chelsea’s form at the previously impenetrable Stamford Bridge has been a major concern. Based on home form alone, Tuchel’s side would sit seventh in the Premier League after winning only 8 of their 16 matches thus far.

Away form, meanwhile, does not appear to be a problem. Only City boast a better record than Chelsea this season, with Tuchel’s side winning 11 of their 17 outings thus far.

Speaking to Chelsea’s in-house media channel after Thursday’s draw at Manchester United, Alonso said: “We want to be up there fighting for the title. We will have to be there next year, keep this form away and do better at home.

“We are still trying to compete 100 per cent this season, it’s important to be fighting every week, be ready for the FA Cup final and finish in third position.”
