Marco van Basten fillets Ajax as Rangers Champions League foes taken apart in furious 'massacre' rant

Marco van Basten has hit out at Ajax's Champions League performance as he questioned their transfer policy with the Eredivisie outfit having a mixed start to life in Europe's elite competition despite spending over £100million this summer.

Boss Alfredo Schreuder has come under-fire after the 6-1 defeat on Tuesday. And the Amsterdam giants have only picked up one win from their opening three games in Group A and sit in third place - only ahead of Rangers - who they meet at Ibrox on November 1.

Speaking to Dutch media via TuttoNapoli, Van Basten didn't hold back in a scathing attack on Ajax’s performance and suggested that the result against the Serie A club cannot be justified. He said: “The result, 6-1, was a massacre, it’s unacceptable to be outclassed like that by Napoli, a good team, but that does not justify the hammering suffered.

“Incomprehensible the market that Ajax made, spending €100m in a strange and crazy way. Something is wrong.”

The thrashing is said to have hurt Schreuder's men so much that they did not want to exchange shirts with their opponents after the match, refusing the gesture from the Italian side's kit-man following the full time whistle.

It is likely that it could end up a straight shoot out between Ajax and the Scottish Premiership side for a Europa League spot.
