Marco Silva gives verdict on Liverpool tactics and what Fulham 'deserved' from game

Fulham boss Marco Silva believes his side produced an “almost perfect” performance against Liverpool – and deserved more from their Premier League opener.

Aleksander Mitrovic scored twice – one a header, the other a penalty having been fouled by Virgil van Dijk – as the promoted Londoners held the Reds to a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Fulham overwhelmed Jurgen Klopp’s side during the first half despite being hampered by a number of key absences.

And when asked if the game felt like a win, Silva said: “No, it didn’t feel like a victory. It felt like a draw. But I think we deserved more from the game than a point.

“Liverpool had more control in the second half but I think that our organisation and our great, great first half – they have the individual quality to create chances – was almost perfect.

“The way we started and the intensity we had was really good and I have to congratulate our fans and our players, it was a great atmosphere.

“We know how Liverpool are aggressive when they attack the space behind and we controlled those moments in the first half. They are not just really good with the ball, they are really aggressive in the right way without the ball and we matched them from the first to the last minute of the game.”

Fulham, the runaway Championship winners last season, were beaten at home by Arsenal in their opening game when they were last in the Premier League two years ago.

And of avoiding defeat, Silva said: “It’s important. We came from a great, great season. It’s always important to start with a good result. Three points would have been better but a good performance and the right attitude and commitment and desire, we showed all that.”
