Marcelo Bielsa details latest Leeds United absence as Kalvin Phillips injury countdown begins

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has spoken to journalists this morning in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Whites' trip to Merseyside tomorrow.

Liverpool host Leeds at Anfield in Boxing Day's rearranged fixture, which has been sandwiched between home matches against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur for Bielsa's men.

It is only a matter of time before the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper return to the fold, having missed close to three months with hamstring injuries.

The pair were both substituted in the 2-2 draw with Brentford during early December and have not made a matchday squad since.

In previous weeks, Marcelo Bielsa has repeatedly stated he expects the pair to be back in contention during the first week of March.

Given that is seven days from now, the countdown is truly on for a long-awaited and no doubt celebrated homecoming.

Bielsa provided an update on injured defender Robin Koch, who sustained a cut to the head and was duly substituted in Sunday's 4-2 defeat to Man United.

Koch had been bloodied and was withdrawn for that reason, according to the Argentine, however concerns have been raised by the PFA and charities such as brain injury association Headway, that Koch was allowed to return to the field with a possible concussion.

This has been refuted by the club, who insist all necessary concussion protocols were carried out.

Koch himself reassured supporters on social media, commending the 'good care' received from Leeds' medical team while stating he would be 'back soon'.

Due to the proximity of Leeds' visit to Liverpool, Koch is ruled out of this week's initial fixture under concussion guidelines.

"I was convinced that it was just the bleeding from the cut because that was the first conclusion after the evaluation the player had. After when he manifested different symptoms he was substituted," Bielsa said.

Elsewhere on the injury front, Bielsa reported no new issues - except for Koch - which is positive news for Stuart Dallas who was hauled off two weeks ago but saw out 90 minutes versus Manchester United.

"None in particular," the Argentine coach answered when posed with the question of new issues for his squad.

A decision is also yet to be made on whether teenage defender Leo Hjelde requires surgery for a knee problem picked up in the same game as Dallas' withdrawal.
