Maps show dispersal zones across town ahead of 'potential car meet' at Tesco

Multiple dispersal zones will be put in place in Wigan this weekend ahead of a 'planned car meet' at a Tesco supermarket.

Police said the vehicle meet has been planned to take place at Tesco on Cross Street in Hindley at around 3pm on Sunday (April 2). Officers have issued a dispersal zone for the area near the supermarket.

Three more dispersal zones - giving police the power to move people out of an area - have been issued across Wigan, including on Westwood Way, around the Robin Retail Park and in an area of Leigh near Pennington Flash. Police said they will be in place until 3am on Monday.

Officers said 'motorists are advised not to attend' the vehicle meet. A post on the GMP Wigan West Facebook page this morning said: "Police have issued dispersal powers in relation to a potential vehicle meet at Tesco, Hindley, between the hours of 3pm on Sunday 2nd April 2023 until 3am Monday 3rd April 2023.

"Motorists are advised not to attend." This comes after four dispersal zones were put in place in similar areas last month ahead of another planned car meet.

Organisers claimed the event had been arranged with the approval of both Greater Manchester Police and Wigan Council. But a spokesperson for Wigan Council told the Manchester Evening News that no permission has been granted for the event as claimed.

In January, police descended on the borough following a 'car meet' that saw 20 vehicles, with two drivers racing each other at any one time. Officers seized cars involved in the event on Redgate Road, in Ashton-in-Makerfield, on January 22.
