Map shows worst performing GP surgeries across Bristol region

Three GP surgeries in the Bristol region received a “requires improvement” rating in their latest inspection by the Care Quality Commission. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England.

The CQC inspects health providers and gives them one of four overall ratings - outstanding, good, requires improvement, or inadequate. A total of three GPs surgeries in the Bristol area received the “requires improvement” rating at their latest inspection as of February 1, the most recent date available.

These were Lawrence Hill Health Centre in Bristol and Graham Road Surgery and Horizon Health Centre, both in Weston-Super-Mare. You can find the practices in your area with the lowest ratings using our interactive map below.

The CQC is not the only body to rate GPs surgeries - patients have their say as well.. Every year, the NHS carries out a survey where patients give their opinions on their GP surgery.

Exclusive analysis of these ratings has been carried out by the Reach Data Unit to rank all 6,418 practices across England. You can see how your local practice ranked here:

Speaking about the ratings, a spokesperson for Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB, said: “We welcome valuable feedback on local GP services, and are pleased that results across our area are above the national average for people’s overall experience, the helpfulness of receptionists, and the choice of appointments available to local people.

“While there continues to be high demand on GP services alongside national and local challenges in recruiting GP staff, we are continuing to support local practices to improve access to services and provide high quality care to patients.

“We work with all practices with a ‘Requires Improvement’ rating, supporting the development and implementation of action plans to address recommendations from CQC reports and to improve care for patients.

The spokesperson said that at Horizon Health Centre and Graham Road, new technical improvements have been made to phone systems, giving patients shorter waits and faster access to appointment bookings and other support from the surgeries.

“At Lawrence Hill Health Centre, measures have been put in place to improve recruitment and provide more effective administration processes.

“Practices are working hard to make sure everyone can access the right support when they need it; whether that’s online or face-to-face. GP surgery teams are growing and people may be offered an appointment with a specialist such as an advanced nurse practitioner, physiotherapist, or clinical pharmacist rather than a GP. Our local campaign ‘Your GP surgery team cares for you’ highlights some of the innovation happening in our area," said the spokesperson.
