Map of Dublin based on Super Mario World made just in time for St Patrick's Day

As Ireland has been going through different Levels of lockdown, there's been a new level unlocked as Dublin is now in the world of Super Mario.

The Geography Pin has been recreating maps as Super Mario illustrations and ahead of St. Patrick’s Day he have added a bit of colour to the map of Dublin.

Peruvian illustrator Miguel Alfaro uploaded the map of the capital inspired by the classic Nintendo video game from his childhood to create a virtual trip for himself.

He said on Instagram: “It's almost St. Patrick's Day, and due to people's response to my Ireland illustrator, here I come with something new and very challenging to create!

“It was definitely worth the hard work.”

His website has a new Europe based store where you can find prints of other countries.

Alfaro is based in Lima, Peru and he took up his hobby of creating maps for countries and states around the world, and turned it into a side business on his Instagram page.

He told Dublin Live: "I picked Mario solely because of childhood memories, and how easy it is to tie it to one of my interests: geography and maps. So I see the Mario Bros map, and I get inspired to create my own version of a certain country.

"I chose Dublin because I had a fan tell me about St. Patrick's Day, and that day is pretty unheard of here, so I figured I could do a nice and challenging illustration by picking the capital city as a personal challenge.

"I actually wanted to go to Dublin and get to know it for the first time, especially because it is very accessible to me as an airlines worker, but then COVID happened and I had to postpone it.

"Many of my friends here wanted to go to the US or to London, and they are beautiful, but the fact that everybody wanted to go there was off putting

"So I researched the other country in the British Isles, and I was pleasantly surprised when I found the Rock of Cashel, and then I found everything else and I fell in love.

"I don't celebrate St Patrick Day, it is very unheard of in Peru, I may have heard it being mentioned in an American TV series or movies but that's it!"

The digital artist who is employed at a local airline has been selling his visualisations of the world which include geographical locations, motorways and even cycling routes.

And with St. Patrick's Day is around the corner, The Geography Pin wants everyone to celebrate Irish culture with his art prints.

The 28-year-old told us that his artwork started becoming successful six months ago.

He said: "The first one I did was New Zealand, and people loved it and started asking for prints, so that's when it began.

"Even though I am still in baby steps in terms of success, I do hope to make a living out of this.

"My day to day job is being a customer agent at the airport for a local airline here in Lima

"While I got to keep my job, it is still a struggle due to COVID."

Irish people have reacted by commenting: “Wow! This is amazing, you got the M50, the Docklands, North Bull Island wow.”

Someone else said: “That is class, love it.”

Another user said: “Can the Square Tallaght be Bowser's Castle?”

Even Virgin Media's Gavin Reilly said: “Missing the Spire.”

The seller has also recreated popular European maps and other locations from around the world.

The digital illustrations can be found on the website here.
