Manuel Neuer leaves taxi driver furious after 75-mile drive to return lost wallet

Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer left a German taxi driver raging after he'd driven 75 miles to hand his wallet back - only to be shocked by his reaction.

The driver, named as Hazir S, gave the goalkeeper a lift from the club's training ground to an apartment in the exclusive residential Lehel area of Munich. Later on in his shift, the taxi driver found a wallet containing £700 in cash as well as several cards including a Black Mastercard.

Hazir S, having clocked it belonged to Neuer, decided to make a 75-mile trip to drop it back, which would've cost a normal paying customer £340. Therefore, he was shocked by the reception he received, as the Germany international failed to say thank you and offered no cash by way of gratitude. Instead, he simply handed the driver a Bayern Munich shirt.

Under German law, an individual who stumbles across money of £425 or more is entitled to a five per cent finder's fee - with an additional three per cent for anything over that value. As a result, Hazir S was entitled to £29, with Sky Germany reporting the taxi driver's huge frustration.

Hazir S told them: "Neuer's name and address were on his ID. I found a lot of cash, credit card and a driver’s licence belonging to Neuer in the car. About 10 days after I returned the wallet, a box arrived at my house.

"There was only a jersey in the box... not even a thank you note. This finder's fee is a mockery! I have four children... he made fun of me. I can't do anything with the jersey... it's a complete disappointment."

Neuer, meanwhile, is gearing up for another season at the Allianz Arena after the Bavarians recently claimed their 10th straight Bundesliga title. The 36-year-old moved to Bayern back in 2010 and recently penned a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2024.

"I'm very pleased that my journey continues at FC Bayern," he said. "We'll have a very good team again with which we can play for every title. As a goalkeeper, captain and leader, I want to be the support and a key factor in our big goals. We want to extend our title record and compete again for the DFB Cup and Champions League."

Bayern have also secured new deals for the likes of Thomas Muller and Serge Gnabry but were forced to let Robert Lewandowski head to Barcelona after he expressed a desire to seek a new challenge with his contract winding down.
