Manuel Akanji's plan to stop Cristiano Ronaldo at World Cup as Man City star makes injury admission

Here are your Manchester City evening headlines on Sunday, December 4.

Akanji outlines plan to stop Ronaldo at World Cup

Manuel Akanji was denied the chance to face Cristiano Ronaldo in the Manchester derby earlier this season as the former Manchester United forward remained on the bench during Manchester City's ruthless in a 6-3 victory.

The centre-back will come up against three City teammates in Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva, while he will also get the chance to try and stop Ronaldo, who has since left United in disgrace after a controversial interview with Piers Morgan. And Akanji feels Ronaldo will still pose a huge threat to Switzerland despite his struggles at United.

Discussing how Switzerland will try to stop Ronaldo, Akanji explained how keeping him away from goal will be key - knowing Ronaldo has scored five goals in his last two clashes with the Swiss.

Akanji said: "Even though he's older now, he's an incredible goal machine. You can't give him any space in the penalty area. When he gets to the ball, the ball is usually inside. You have to be very close to him."

Phillips 'wouldn't be in England squad' without Walker

Kalvin Phillips has admitted he wouldn't have been in as good a position to make the England World Cup squad without help from Manchester City teammate Kyle Walker.

Both Phillips and Walker underwent surgery on separate issues just six weeks before the World Cup, putting their involvement in serious doubt. However, Phillips recovered from his shoulder surgery with a week before the England squad was announced, and while City star Walker wasn't quite ready by that point, he was deemed fit enough to play a part in Qatar.

Reflecting on his first England outing of the season, Phillips admitted that if he hadn't been working with Walker to get back to fitness in time, he may not have been ready for the World Cup.

"We literally were in every day together, [John] Stonesy was injured as well before that," Phillips told England's media team.
