Mansfield drink driver snared as he was on the way to pick up more alcohol

A man committed his fourth offence of drink-driving after he was pursued by police before he crashed. Christian Evans was double the drink drive limit when officers tried to stop him as he drove to buy more drink.

His silver-coloured Renault Clio was in the Mansfield area in the early hours of July 17, Nottingham Crown Court heard on Wednesday (November 9). A police check flagged the car was uninsured - and they followed, displaying their vehicle's blue lights.

But Evans drove off, going through red traffic lights, driving in excess of 75mph and at 60mph for four minutes before he collided with a man in a 1964-plate BMW, who was shocked and had shoulder and back pain.

A statement from him revealed the BMW was his "pride and joy" but he had to wait for it to be repaired after the smash. The man was left nervous getting into the driver's side and felt like he had to press the brakes as he approached traffic lights.

Evans, 33, of Robin Hood Avenue, Warsop, Mansfield, has 17 convictions for 32 offences, including drink-driving, failing to provide a specimen and no insurance. The new offences were dangerous driving, which was met with a 15-month prison term, drink-driving and disqualified driving (three months on each in prison concurrently), no insurance and failing to stop for police (licence endorsed).

Evans pleaded guilty to all charges. A driving ban was imposed to start for five years on his release. Thomas Welshman, mitigating, said Evans had driven his partner's car after a DJing job. He had been drinking, saw police, and panicked and drove off.

"He is sorry for the injuries to the other driver," added Mr Welshman. Judge Stuart Rafferty KC told Evans: "Your driving record is abysmal".
