Manny Pacquiao's son wins boxing debut as he looks to follow in father's footsteps

Manny Pacquiao's son made a successful start to his amateur boxing career in San Diego on Saturday night night as he took his first steps along the same well-travelled road as his father.

The legendary Filipino left one of the biggest legacies in the sport when he retired last year as the only eight-division world champion in boxing history.

His son, also named Emmanuel, represented the same Wild Card Boxing Club which was home to his father for the majority of his career.

And he had his arm raised at the end of the bout to at least start his career in winning fashion.

Pacquiao Jr has been training with some of the sport's biggest names including legendary trainer Freddie Roach and the sport's current pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez.

The young star initially began pursuing a career in modelling and is also known for his social media following with previous plans to become an influencer.

His boxing debut came against his famous father's wishes who expressed his desire for his son to follow another career path.

"We are really discouraging him [from boxing]," Pacquiao Sr said in 2019. "In our home, we don't have any gloves or boxing equipment. But we have a basketball court.

"It pains me to see him box because I know how hard it is."

His father was unable to attend his boxing debut as he continues his presidential campaign in the Phillipines.
