Manny Pacquiao, 45, denied entry to Paris Olympics due to age

Manny Pacquiao

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently confirmed that boxing legend Manny Pacquiao will not be granted an exception to compete in the Paris Games, as he is five years over the age limit. Even though Pacquiao expressed interest in boxing at the age of 45 at the upcoming Olympics in Paris, the IOC has upheld its rule that limits boxers to the age of 40 for Olympic competition.

The IOC, which now oversees Olympic boxing after disbanding the International Boxing Association, explained that the age limit for boxing was raised to 40 in 2013. This rule change had previously made it possible for Pacquiao to potentially compete in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, but he declined the opportunity due to his commitments as a senator in the Philippines at that time.

Despite uncertainties surrounding Pacquiao's participation in the upcoming Paris Olympics, the Philippines Olympic body had discussed the possibility of securing a 'universality' entry for him. However, the IOC clarified that the Philippines did not meet the criteria for this entry, as they have been deemed too successful to benefit from the scheme.

Pacquiao, who retired from professional boxing in 2021 after a remarkable career that included winning world titles in a record eight different weight divisions, remains a respected figure in the sport. At age 42, he concluded his boxing journey with a total of 72 fights under his belt.

While Pacquiao's Olympic aspirations may not come to fruition, his legacy in the sport of boxing continues to inspire fans around the world. The IOC's decision to uphold the age limit serves as a reminder of the rules and regulations that govern the Olympic Games, ensuring fair competition for all athletes involved.
