A deliberately lit fire that exploded, killing an innocent man four-wheel-driving with friends in Perth bushland is being investigated by homicide detectives.

Jack Kinneen, 23, died when the fire at Pinjar exploded at 1.30am on September 22.

Mr Kinneen and six friends were driving in two vehicles in the bushland when they came across the fire.

The group got out of the vehicles and approached the blaze. Mr Kinneen was closer than his friends when the blast occurred.

His friends gave first aid and called an ambulance, but Mr Kinneen could not be saved.

Detective Sergeant Jeremy Spivey said police are now focusing who lit the fire and want to speak to a pair seen in the area shortly before the incident.

One is a balding man in his 40s, and the other a woman who was driving an early 2000s model, grey/bronze Holden Commodore.

Det Sgt Spivey would not say what was in the fire causing it to explode, but said there was no evidence it was set up to target or harm anyone.

Anyone who was in the Pinjar area near Perry Road at 1.30am on Thursday, September 22 and those who may have footage of the area is asked to contact Crime Stopper.
