Manhunt launched as occupants flee suspected stolen car after Newcastle police chase

A search is on for the occupants of a suspected stolen car that was cornered by police outside a city shopping centre.

The Nissan was tracked through Newcastle city centre by police on Wednesday afternoon before being brought to a stop at the back of Eldon Garden. Police say those inside then fled on foot.

Police believe the car had been fitted with cloned plates. Several marked police cars and the police helicopter were used to track the car.

And one eyewitness said they heard a loud "screech" of tyres before it came to a stop on the pavement.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “At about 2pm today officers received information about the movements of a vehicle of interest that was believed to be using cloned plates.

“Officers subsequently tracked the car’s movements, with the support of the National Police Air Service (NPAS) and the vehicle came to a stop in the Eldon Gardens area of Newcastle. The occupants then made off on foot.

“Police are currently at the scene and the vehicle has been uplifted. Enquiries are ongoing to trace the occupants.”
