A manhunt is underway for a Northern Territory prisoner after his escape from custody.

Earl Junior Foster, 23, who was on remand, injured one police officer and knocked down another as he fled the Elliott Police Station Watch House on Tuesday.

The remote town is located almost halfway between Darwin and Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway.

One officer suffered a cut to his cheek and was taken to Tennant Creek hospital for medical treatment.

Foster is described as being of medium build and was last seen wearing a black singlet - with the word "dreams" written across front and back - and black shorts.

A search is underway for Foster, who was due to be transported to Tennant Creek before he escaped.

"Additional police resourcing has been deployed to Elliott from Tennant Creek to assist with investigations," Superintendent Mark Grieve said.

Police say Foster is not a risk to the public and anyone with information about his whereabouts should contact Crime Stoppers.
