Jamie Lee Roberts was serving a two year and four month sentence for assaulting police. (AAP)

A Queensland man jailed for assaulting police is on the run after escaping from a low security section of a Townsville prison.

Jamie Lee Roberts, who was serving a two year and four month stint behind bars for assaulting police, absconded from the low security farm at 7.30am on Sunday.

Police believe he may be driving a white Toyota Hilux with the licence plate QGS D30 and have warned members of the public not to approach him.

Roberts is described as being 190cm tall and of medium build. He has a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.

He has also a number of identifying tattoos including a name in old English script on his back and a rose and female face on his left arm.

Queensland police are advising anyone who sees Roberts to call triple zero immediately.
