Manhattan DA Seeks Jail Time For Trump Over Gag Order

Donald Trump to testify in New York civil fraud trial

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has taken a firm stance against former President Trump's alleged violations of a gag order imposed by Judge Juan Merchan. Bragg has urged Judge Merchan to consider the possibility of imposing a 30-day jail term on Trump for any future breaches of the order.

The gag order was put in place by Judge Merchan last month in response to what he deemed as 'prior extrajudicial statements' made by Trump. These statements were seen as posing a risk to the administration of justice in the ongoing case.

Under the terms of the gag order, Trump is prohibited from making or instructing others to make public statements about witnesses, counsel, court staff, DA staff, family members of staff, prospective jurors, or chosen jurors.

During the initial stages of the criminal trial and jury selection process, Manhattan prosecutors alleged that Trump had violated the gag order on three separate occasions through social media posts. As a result, they recommended a fine of $3,000 for these violations, with each violation carrying a proposed penalty of $1,000.

The latest developments in the case highlight the escalating tensions between the legal team representing Trump and the Manhattan District Attorney's office. The potential threat of jail time adds a new dimension to the already contentious legal battle surrounding Trump's alleged misconduct.
