Maneskin address Eurovision drug taking accusations live on stage

Måneskin made their return to the Eurovision stage with brand new single Supermodel. The group first found fame in Italy on the X-factor and quickly became favourites to win during last year's competition.

The band is fronted by singer Damiano David and includes guitarist Victoria De Angelis, musician Thomas Raggi and drummer Ethan Torchio. At the end of their performance the lead singer warned this year's winners ‘Don’t get too close to the table’, referring to the allegations that the lead singer was taking illegal drugs during the live final, who was seen lowering his head behind a bucket of drinks.

The band immediately denied these rumours on Instagram and Damiano took a drug test, which came back negative. Eurovision's organisers said in a statement: "No drug use took place in the Green Room and we consider the matter closed."

At the time the singer said: ”I don't use cocaine." After the show in 2021 Damiano said that bandmate Tomas broke a glass with his leg and he cleaning up.

He said: "I don't use drugs. I don't use cocaine… please don't say that."

In a statement in 2021, Eurovision organisers said: "Following allegations of drug use in the Green Room of the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final on Saturday, May 22 (2021), the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), as requested by the Italian delegation, has conducted a thorough review of the facts, including checking all available footage.

"A drug test was also voluntarily undertaken earlier today by the lead singer of the band Måneskin which has returned a negative result seen by the EBU. No drug use took place in the Green Room and we consider the matter closed."

The Eurovision champions then quickly rose to international fame in the following months. They were soon seen making their US television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and were most recently seen performing at Coachella.

The 2022 Italian entry is Mahmood and Blanco with Brividi. The duo are amongst the top five favourites to win the 2022 competition.

Mahmood performed at Eurovision in 2019, which landed him in second place in the competition. This year he is dueting with fellow rapper/ singer to Mahmood to form a group.
