Manchester United youth goalkeeper seals loan exit ahead of transfer deadline

Young Manchester United goalkeeper Ondrej Mastny has joined Portadown on loan, the Irish club has announced.

The 20-year-old, who is a Czech Republic youth international, has joined the NIFL Premiership strugglers on loan for the remainder of the season. It marks the shot-stopper's first temporary loan spell of his career, meaning he will be determined to try and secure some regular first-team football.

Mastny, who joined United from Czech side Vysocina Jihlava back in July 2018, has applied his trade for both the Reds' Under-18s and Under-21s in recent seasons. He made eight appearances for the Under-21s in the Premier League 2 last season, while featuring once for the Under-18s in the Uefa Youth League.

This season, however, the youngster has struggled for regular opportunities, featuring just once for the Under-21s. He has often been named among the substitutes, both in the Premier League 2 and in the EFL Trophy.

Although he is yet to make his first-team debut for United, Mastny, who has already featured for the Czech Republic at Under-20 level, has worked with the first-team squad on matchdays, previously participating in warm-ups. He was included in the travelling party for the first time when United faced Wolves in the third round of the FA Cup at Molineux back in January 2020.

The Czech shot-stopper, who will turn 21 in March, becomes the second United goalkeeper to have swapped Old Trafford for Shamrock Park in recent seasons. Portadown borrowed former Reds goalkeeper Jacob Carney, who is now at Sunderland, in January 2021.

Carney proved to be an immensely popular figure during his time in Ireland, quickly establishing himself as a fans' favourite. He made 26 appearances in total, keeping three clean sheets.

Portadown are currently bottom of the NIFL Premiership table, 15 points adrift from safety. They have won just one of their opening 25 league games this season.
