Manchester United youngster returns to club early as loan move cut short

Manchester United's Charlie Wellens has returned from his loan with Oldham Athletic earlier than expected.

Wellens, who celebrated his 20th birthday this month, signed for National League club Oldham on a four-month loan deal, which ran until 8 January 2023, at the start of September but he's already returned to United ahead of that expiry date.

Oldham have four matches before 8 January but Wellens was not receiving the minutes United staff hoped he would.

The versatile right-back made just four starts for Oldham and played a total of 319 minutes in the league this season. He's now returned to the academy and he made an appearance from the bench for the Under-21s against PSV on Monday.

Wellens made 25 starts from a possible 26 games in the Premier League 2 last season and it remains to be seen whether he will be sent out on loan again in the January transfer window, or whether the club keep him for the rest of the PL2 campaign.

United's U21s have won just once in the PL2 this season but it's understood academy staff are not yet concerned with that form.

Wellens is contracted at Old Trafford until the end of the current campaign.
