Marcus Rashford is facing a losing battle to make Manchester United’s clash with Liverpool, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claims.
The England international suffered a back injury in the FA Cup third-round replay against Wolves on Wednesday and hasn’t been able to train since.
He is due for further tests on Friday, but Solskjaer admits he is not expecting his leading scorer to be back in time for the trip to Anfield.
“Of course we’re going to give him the absolute (maximum) amount of time to find out,” said United’s manager.
“We’ll do some more checks and treatment with him today.
“Yesterday was just a recovery day and some treatment for him.
“I’ve not seen him this morning. I’m not going to hold my breath. I would probably think he wouldn’t be ready, but let’s see - it’s 48 hours, so let’s see.”
Rashford needed to be driven to training on Thursday after leaving Old Trafford the night before in severe discomfort.
He lasted only 16 minutes of the 1-0 win against Wolves after taking a knee to the back from Matt Doherty.
Rashford had been complaining of soreness before that match, which was why he was only named on the bench.
He had been spotted carrying a bone healing machine following the weekend win against Norwich – but in August he revealed he’d regularly used the device since the early stages of his career.
“When I was younger I used to have a lot of problems in my back, so I got used to using this machine,” he said. “I still use it, a bone-healing (ultrasound) machine called Melmak. Put a bit of gel on, then strap it round.”
