Manchester United World Cup quarter-finalists return to training

The nine Manchester United players who suffered elimination from the World Cup at the quarter-final stage have returned for training.

United's Brazilian, Portuguese and English contingent, as well as Dutchman Tyrell Malacia, all reported at the club's Carrington training complex on Tuesday.

Casemiro, Fred and Antony were all on the pitch when Brazil were eliminated by Croatia in a penalty shootout and Portugal pair Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot started in their 1-0 defeat to Morocco the following day.

Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw started in all five of England's matches in Qatar while Marcus Rashford scored three goals in his five appearances.

The group could be involved against Championship leaders Burnley in the League Cup fourth round tie at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Dalot returned to Carrington on Friday to have an apparent hamstring injury he sustained against Morocco assessed, Maguire is in line to start due to United's shortage of available centre-backs and other World Cup participants are in contention for inclusion.

Fernandes was accompanied by his agent Rui Guimaraes when he drove into Carrington.

Jadon Sancho has still not reported for squad training four weeks after it emerged he had flown to the Netherlands for an individual training programme.

United resume their Premier League season with the visit of Nottingham Forest on December 27.

Centre-backs Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane are not scheduled to return until next week as they were involved in the World Cup final between Argentina and France.

If the duo return for training on Monday, they will have only one session before the fixture against Forest the next day.

Martinez became the fifth United player to win the World Cup after England trio Bobby Charlton, Nobby Stiles and John Connelly in 1966 and France midfielder Paul Pogba in 2018.
