Manchester United win race for Chido Obi-Martin after Arsenal contract rejected

Manchester United are closing in on a deal to bring former Arsenal youngster Chido Obi-Martin to the club.

Obi-Martin is currently a free agent after his schoolboy terms at Arsenal expired and he turned down the chance to become a scholar with them.

The 16-year-old has been attracting interest from several clubs, including Bayern Munich, but Manchester United are optimistic they will wrap up a deal for the striker.

The signing of Obi-Martin will be a coup for United given how well the striker has performed at youth level.

He scored 10 goals in a game against Liverpool last season and scored 32 goals for Arsenal’s Under-18s across the whole campaign after being promoted to play for them.

Arsenal made Obi-Martin an offer to stay, which would have seen him turn professional in November when he turns 17, but he has decided to continue his career elsewhere.

“I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone at Arsenal for the past four years,” Obi Martin wrote on Instagram earlier this week.

“The experiences and growth I’ve achieved here have been truly invaluable. A special thanks to the coaches, staff, and team-mates at Hale End.

“The memories made will always be remembered. I wish everyone continued success and all the best for the future.”
