Manchester United waiting on the fitness of two players ahead of Tottenham fixture

Manchester United will assess Christian Eriksen and Anthony Martial ahead of their Premier League home fixture against Tottenham on Wednesday night.

Eriksen missed his first game of the season against Newcastle through illness while Martial has been sidelined for the last two games with a back injury.

United manager Erik ten Hag suggested Martial was in contention to return at the weekend but the 26-year-old was absent from the matchday squad.

Martial has suffered three lay-offs already this season, having sustained hamstring and Achilles injuries that sidelined him for three weeks and six weeks separately.

The France international has been unavailable for nine of United's 13 games, having started all five first-team friendlies during pre-season.

Eriksen was not visible in training on Monday and has until tomorrow to regain fitness, with kick-off against Spurs later than usual at 8.15pm.

The 30-year-old left Tottenham in January 2020 and encountered his former side with Brentford last season when he received a warm ovation from the Spurs supporters at the Community Stadium.

Scott McTominay, back after a one-match domestic suspension, is in line to start for United if Eriksen is unable to recover.

Harry Maguire has been injured for the last three weeks with a thigh problem, while Donny van de Beek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been out for six weeks.

Ten Hag is due to provide updates on Martial and Eriksen at his pre-match press conference, scheduled for the unusually late time of 3.45pm.

It is the latest United have hosted a pre-match Premier League press conference since January 2018.
